Flooding is a serious issue in more homes than one might imagine and knowing just what causes flood damage and what to do after it has occurred is the best way to deal with this type of issue. There are three main causes of flood damage and having a working knowledge of each may help you avoid flooding in your own home and learn how to deal with it if it does occur.

Rain/Natural Disaster- the main cause of any flooding is of course rain and other natural causes. It is far more likely that you will have far too much rain for your home or sewer system in your city to handle resulting in water coming into the home. In most cases, natural flooding will cause water to pool in the lowest level of the home and may not exceed a few inches. In cases of extreme flooding the water can reach heights of several inches to even feet. In this case, most homeowner’s insurance will not cover flood damage unless you have flood insurance. If you live near a body of water that may flood it may be beneficial to get flood insurance.

Water Pipes Breaking- another cause of flooding is of course water pipes breaking. This is more common than you might think and is incredibly common in the winter resulting in no water during the cold months and flooding in the spring when the pipes melt. This is something that is covered in your home insurance meaning that your insurance company will help pay for damage restoration. This is a very common issue that anyone can face with no real factors that make it more or less likely save for older or damaged pipes. You can often find Flood damage restoration and/or local flood damage restoration services with a quick search.

Poorly Constructed Homes- the last issue that might cause flooding is something like a poorly sealed basement, a home that was built under the water table then not sump pumped. This is not all that common in newer homes as home inspections are far stricter than they once were protecting both the contractor and the homeowner. In most cases, this type of damage is not covered in your insurance unless you have a specific cause that you can pinpoint. Say for instance you knew you needed a sump pump but never had one installed, the insurance will not pay and will not help with mold mitigation after the water is gone or carpet cleaning.
