Preventing Ice Dams

This time of year with the melting an refreezing can cause havoc on homeowner’s roofs.  Without a clear path through gutters the water can leak into your home.  These giant ice mounded gutters are often referred to as ice dams.  As the snow packed roofs start to melt during the afternoon hours when it is warmer they water will follow gravity.  As the day gets colder refreezing takes place filling gutters with solid ice and leaving no room for the water to pass through.

After this process repeats itself, water can begin to puddle on roofs and will find a path.  Often the only place it can go is inside your home causing damage from water to your ceilings.  Many times before you even realize it there is a large pool of water in your attic just waiting for an area to go through.  As sheet-rock softens from the moisture it will eventually give way.

The easiest prevention technique is to shovel off the last 3 feet of your roof next to the gutters.  If you are already struggling with ice dams you can call for professional help to remove them.
