Disaster Damage in Minnesota

When thinking about damage from water one often considers flooding or high water tables during the spring summer or fall months to cause water in your basement.  Though common, this is not the only  way water can creep into your home.

Frozen Pipes

Several insurance claims each year for damage from water in Minnesota are also caused by a frozen pipe.  These can occur when the pipes coming into your home or carrying water to your various appliances are not properly insulated.  When they become too cold, the water freezes which causes expansion and over time can create enough pressure to break the pipe.

Hard Water

Another issue can be the wear and tear to pipes by hard water.  After 10-15 years of living in a city with a high count of rust and minerals in the water can eat away at the water ways in your home and the seals is various connections.  This can also cause a flooded basement, or if your appliances are on the 2nd story may leak though the ceiling causing damage to each floor below.

Tips to Check for Disaster Damage

Water can be so destructive to a home.  Some simple checks can help to avoid this devastation in your home.  In the fall and spring, take a flashlight and follow the water lines from each appliance carefully checking each connection along the way.  Also look for any water below the pipes.  Water may be slowly dripping which is a good sign that a larger leak is in your future.  If you spot any water at all call your local plumber.
