Mold or any type of disaster damage for that matter is serious business and should be handled by professionals when possible. There are plenty of questions that homeowners may have when they find mold in their home but the first question has to do directly with mold mitigation and the seriousness of mold. When you first find mold in your home you may find yourself asking, Can mold kill you? The simple answer, if there is one, is yes.

Though not all molds found in homes are serious enough to worry about death or serious illness, there are in fact mold species that can kill humans and animals alike. It is important to know a thing or two about what type of mold you are fighting and how serious your infestation really is. The first thing you should do when you find mold is stop the leak. This will deprive the mold of water that is needed for it to expand and spread.

Next, you should take the time to call a mold mitigation company that can tell you just what type of mold you are fighting. In most cases, mold is named by the color. Brown and green molds are very common and are not particularly deadly. Though long exposure to them can cause breathing troubles and direct aspiration of any mold is going to make it hard to breathe, they are hardly deadly in the amounts that are generally found in homes.

These types of mold can generally be killed with household bleach and other solvents and may not even need a mold mitigation company to come in. There are other strains however that can be seriously deadly if not taken care of properly. Black mold for instance cannot be killed with household bleach or other cleaning solvents and is incredibly deadly if breathed. In most cases deaths associated mold are not specifically tied to the mold but rather to the symptoms and allergic reactions that the mold can cause.

In more cases than not, the real danger is the allergic reaction that the mold will cause when breathed in. This can be something as simple as a slight cough to complete restriction of your air ways and the potential for anaphylactic shock or stopping breathing completely. If you are at all concerned by mold found in your home make sure to call a professional company that can identify and remove the mold completely to make your home safe again.
